RMM vs. Microsoft Intune: which does an MSP need?
The categories overlap, but the operating models are different. Compare the jobs your technicians must complete, the customer boundaries they must respect, and the complete cost of producing a reliable result.
Start with the operating job, not the product label
Intune is built around cloud device, application, configuration, and compliance management in the Microsoft ecosystem. RMM tools are generally built around technician operations across many endpoints and customers: monitoring, alerts, corrective work, remote support, and repeatable service delivery. Neither category guarantees that a particular product will handle your workflow well.
Configuration and compliance policy
Intune: A core strength for Entra-connected, Microsoft-centered device estates.
Typical RMM: Usually present as operational policy and automation rather than identity-aware compliance management.
Monitoring and alert response
Intune: Provides device, compliance, deployment, and security signals; broader operations may require other Microsoft services.
Typical RMM: Usually designed around cross-customer health, service, resource, event, and custom-condition queues.
Ad-hoc scripts and remediation
Intune: Supports PowerShell scripts and scheduled or on-demand remediations through the Intune Management Extension.
Typical RMM: Often optimized for rapid technician-run jobs, reusable scripts, targeting, output, and alert-triggered workflows.
Application management
Intune: Supports Win32, Store, and catalog applications; Enterprise App Management is an additional subscription.
Typical RMM: Varies by vendor; evaluate catalog breadth, update evidence, rollback, maintenance windows, and add-on cost.
Remote support
Intune: Remote Help supports attended and qualified unattended scenarios, with licensing and same-tenant requirements.
Typical RMM: Commonly built for technician support across many customer organizations; controls and evidence vary by product.
MSP multi-tenant operations
Intune: Microsoft 365 Lighthouse gives eligible CSP partners multi-tenant views and management workflows.
Typical RMM: Usually treats customer and site separation as a primary operating model from the start.
Intune-centered
Standardized Microsoft estates
Strong fit when identity-aware configuration, compliance, enrollment, and Microsoft policy are central, and the team can supply the remaining monitoring, support, packaging, and operating processes.
RMM-centered
Fast cross-customer operations
Strong fit when technicians need one queue for health, alerts, scripts, patch work, inventory, and remote support across varied customers. Broad agent privilege makes security and tenant isolation critical evaluation areas.
Intune + RMM
Split policy from operations
Useful when Intune owns enrollment, configuration, and compliance while an RMM owns operational response. Document one authority for each workflow to prevent conflict, duplicate deployment, and ambiguous evidence.
Compare total cost, not one license line
Build the same monthly worksheet for every option. Use actual quotes and current tenant eligibility; Microsoft and vendor packaging can change.
- Base Intune or Microsoft 365 licensing for every in-scope user or device
- Remote Help, Enterprise App Management, security, analytics, or other add-on licenses
- RMM subscription, technician seats, endpoint tiers, modules, minimums, and contract terms
- Application packaging, policy engineering, monitoring integration, and report-building labor
- Duplicate tooling during migration and any capabilities retained in both platforms
- Technician time per alert, script, support session, application update, and monthly report
